"Side Man" is an emotional memory play about the upheaval
in the family of a jazz musician.
The narrator of this cinematic play is Clifford Glimmer, the
only son of Gene, a talented but self-absorbed jazz
trumpeter, and his alcoholic wife, Terry.
Clifford describes the tumultuous relationship his parents
shared and the haphazard career journey Gene followed over
the course of three decades. Dedicated more to his music
than his family, Gene refuses to accept a regular job to
support his family, and their home life gradually unravels,
with Clifford eventually assuming the role of breadwinner
his father has forsaken and offering his mother the
emotional support Gene cannot.

The Art of Jazz 2012: Entries now being
accepted for 7th annual juried exhibition
Since
its inception seven years ago, The Frank Scott Memorial Art
Show: The Art of Jazz has highlighted works of art from all
media -- from quilts to stone to pastels.
What these works of art have in common is the surprising ability
to interpret the experience of listening to music into a visual
art medium. The
Berks Arts
Council is currently seeking artists to participate in
its 7th annual juried exhibition. The exhibit is open to all
fine and craft artists with work focusing on the theme
“Celebrate Jazz.”
The show runs March 2-27 in the Rolf and Renate Schmidt Gallery
at the
GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, 201 Washington Street,
Reading, and coincides with the 22nd annual Boscov's Berks Jazz
Fest.
The Juror for The Art of Jazz is artist and guitar designer
Dick Boak
(photo above), Director of Artist and Public Relations for C.F.
Martin & Co. Guitars.
“After meeting Mr. Boak and seeing his work, I was inspired to
ask him to act as juror” said Art of Jazz Curator Fran Parzanese.
“His work is an amazing blend of music and art, and we hope that
it inspires some creative interpretations of Jazz!”
Three cash prizes will be awarded: $500 for first place, $200
for second place, and $100 for third place, with Honorable
Mentions awarded at the juror’s discretion. An Artist’s
Reception and Awards Presentation celebration will be held in
the Schmidt
Gallery Friday, March 2, starting at 5:30 p.m.
“The Frank Scott Memorial Art Show: The Art of Jazz,” and the
Frank Scott Memorial award were founded during the 2005 Berks
Jazz Fest by the Berks Arts Council along with local businessman
and artist Jerry Holleran. The Frank Scott Memorial events honor
legendary local jazz musician Frank Scott and are made possible
through the generous support of the JerLyn Foundation.
To be eligible for awards, submissions must be original work
produced after January 1, 2009.
The entry fee for Berks Arts Council Members is $15 for the
first artwork, with $5 for each additional work up to a total of
three.
The fee for non BAC members is $20 for the first artwork, with
$5 for each additional work up to a total of three.
Cash, check, money order, and major credit cards will be
accepted.
The prospectus for the art show can be found online at
berksarts.org
or by calling the Berks Arts Council at 610-898-1930.
